Have you ever just stopped and thought about how vast and broad word “crafting” is? Crafting, making, and creating include so many different areas. This makes the crafting community a large hub for learning, teaching, collaborating, and sharing. Platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, and blog sites help bring together this large community.
If you are anything like me, crafting as a hobby was just that: a hobby you shared with a limited amount of people. Maybe you were a part of a small crafting circle. Or perhaps you enjoyed sitting in the few quiet and calm minutes you had to unwind, while you worked on a relaxing project. Growing, up, my mom was an avid crafter. She sewed, crocheted, did woodworking, and a ton of other things.
Naturally, I was interested in crafting from a young age. My dad says he can remember me doing latch hook when I was about 5 years old. As I grew older, crafting of all kinds interested me. When I was 11, my mom gave me my own sewing machine and I began to sew for myself. My mom taught me how to crochet, embroider, cook, and so much more. I always enjoyed crafting on my own. But crafting was also enjoyable when I could enjoy it with my mom and my sisters.
My First Crafting Community
As my sisters and I grew up and became women in our own homes, crafting drew us back together. Along with my mom and some of my nieces, we’ve been our own little craft circle. One of my sisters taught us how to quilt. Most recently, we came together and learned how to use the Cricut Cuttlebug and Explore machines. Sharing the enjoyment of crafting with my family has been one of my most treasured experiences.
My family will always be my first and most cherished crafting circle. But this past year has brought me through a journey where I have become a part of an even bigger crafting community. I have learned so much. I have met so many talented and creative people. It has been a pleasure and privilege becoming friends with many in the community. So to pour back into this beautiful community, I am happy to coordinate a special crafting circle. We call it “Craft Around the ‘Gram.” (Not affiliated, associated, or sponsored by Instagram.)
Virtual Crafting Community
How does it work? Each round includes 8 different makers. Each maker goes live from her (or his) Instagram account, at a specified time, for 15 minutes. In that time frame, the maker shows you how to complete a craft based on the theme for that round. How cool is that?!! That is 2 hours of hanging out and crafting and learning 8 different crafts. FREE!!! The schedule for 2021 is posted below. The first round is set for Friday, January 29th. You won’t want to miss it! The team is an All-Star lineup of super talented and fun makers. I hope to see you there!
